What is VSL D1?
In 2004, the former Green Mountain Soccer League (GMSL) merged with the Champlain Valley Union Soccer League (CVYSL). Both leagues decided to adopt a new league name; the Vermont Soccer League (VSL).
The VSL D1 (Division 1) is made up of Premier Club teams (i.e. Nordic Spirit, Far Post, Capital, Mountain, Rutland soccer clubs to name a few) where D2/3 teams are town club teams. Players on D2/3 clubs are generally bond by their school district. Players are allowed to roster on a D1 team and a D2 team (dual roster).
There are some stronger town teams that normally would play in D2 accepted into D1. These are generally teams that wish to participate in the Vermont Soccer Associations State Cup. Not all teams are accepted into this division. A team wishing to compete must prove a level of competitiveness with past results (league or tournament).
The D1 teams are from all over the state and some teams from New York. The teams in this Division have to be prepared for the travel that comes along with this level of commitment and competition. The D1 schedule also has two matches in one day (the scheduler tries to avoid back to back matches). The U14 and below divisions generally play on Saturday and the U15 and above generally play on Sundays. Within the list of D1, there are a number of teams that also participate in leagues out of State (i.e. NEPSYL and SuperY). These leagues require an additional level of commitment and competition. These leagues have special requirements and do not accept all teams that wish to enter. Due to the extra matches and scheduling conflicts, the D1 has a special division within the normal D1 league schedule. This division is called the Q-League. These teams play a reduced schedule (generally two weekends). The main purpose of this league is to qualify teams for State Cup hence the “Q” in Q-League. |
